Darren “Dash” Bowater at the Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler suggests trying Wagonga Inlet and looking for bait balls where there have been a mixed bag, including salmon, tailor, trevally, bream and flathead. Look for the bait either on your sounder or the birds. He got a nice 65cm salmon on 1-3kg stick. He suggests dropping your leader down to six pound as the water is crystal clear.
There were also reports of some big rock lobster being disturbed by the excavator working on the Narooma breakwaters. Apparently local winter swimmer Trevor Bennett found a monster just inside the shark net but could not wrap his hands around it!
The creeks and rivers are still fishing okay, particularly on a sunny afternoon when the sun warms things up. Slow down the retrieve of your lure and fish the dark-bottom shallows for dusky flathead and as always the structures like fallen trees for bream. Fish have to eat, even in winter!
Jewfish are coming out of Tuross in the deeper channels on live baits, while perch and bream are hanging around the oyster racks. Some nice perch are also being caught in Moruya around the bridge, but remember it's still strictly catch and release for bass and perch.
There have been some reports of albacore and bluefin out wide at the moment with anglers trolling teasers and skirts to get hooked up, while deep dropping for blue eye and other deep-water critters in these calm conditions is always an option.
Bermi Bait & Tackle posted on Wednesday morning that bluefin showed up out the front of Bermagui on the 150'30 line with a local longliner finding plenty of fish of mixed size. One was 158kg clean. They also had a broadbill swordfish at 177kg. “Might be time to have a crack. Around 20nm from the harbour.”
NSGFC report – The Narooma Sport and Game Fishing Club outing held on our home ground, Wagonga inlet, on Saturday was a bit of a flop as far as fishing goes. The seniors did not score many at all, being outdone by the juniors! A couple of the boys caught some nice salmon and snapper, well done boys.
This month’s “Eat in at the club” is on this Friday, June 30. Our menu for the evening is egg and bacon roll for $3. Come and wash it down with a nice ale or wine!
You can dine in on any Friday evening in the Clubhouse, with everyone encouraged to bring a steak for the barbecue, something to heat in the kitchen or perhaps a pizza to put in the club’s pizza oven. Lots of options so please consider.
If any members want to use the clubhouse at any other time, just see any of the committee members to secure a key for entry. The club is yours to use, please use it!
