Narooma boats Nitro and PlayStation were right in the action on the weekend with fish in the 30-45kg range swimming around the boat for a couple of hours, both boats managed 20 odd fish each, releasing most! 

The boys from Narooma Ocean Hut Compleat Angler meanwhile spent the weekend terrorizing Tuross Lake but after two days and a total of 15 hours fishing, they only ended up with 15 legal sized fish. But a 75cm big girl caught after 999 casts made it seem worth all the effort.

Graham from Tackle World Moruya reports the Moruya bridge area has been seeing some good surface action for estuary perch  – remember catch and release only!.

Further down stream at the hole in the wall, a local diver reports good numbers of bream and luderick hanging around the entrance. All the oyster racks throughout the Tuross system are still fishing well for bream and perch, mainly on soft plastics. A few have also been enticed on worms and fresh nippers. 

A lot of very average size flathead are being caught around the four-ways in Tuross.

South Head and Congo are both fishing well off the rocks for squid at the moment. Drummer and bream are coming in off the rocks at Bingi using cunji.  There have also been some nice lobsters around the headlands. 

Coila, Windsock beach and the breakwall have been a little quiet this week. Early morning and late afternoon have been the key times for salmon and tailor, pillies being the bait of choice.

Offshore, the cuttlefish are starting to move in and so are the snapper.  Some sizeable reds have been caught just off Moruya in 5 to 12 metres of water using cuttlefish and fresh squid as bait. The 5 inch Gulp Jerkshad has also proven to be deadly around the bombies at Pedro point. There are still plenty of flathead out there and also the odd morwong. Thanks Graham!

​Member for Bega Andrew Constance has advised that applications are now open for Round 2 of the NSW Boating Program which is set to commit $17 million to improve boating facilities across NSW. Community groups are invited to submit applications for funding.

A recent compliance operation in Snowy Mountains has found the majority of recreational trout fishers doing the right thing.

DPI’s Director of Fisheries Compliance, Patrick Tully said Fisheries officers inspected more than 800 anglers on the Thredbo and Eucumbene rivers, with only six per cent of recreational fishers found to be either without a fishing licence, in possession of undersize fish, exceeding the daily bag limit or using bait in fly and lure only waters. Trout streams are now closed until the October long weekend.

DPI has been working with NSW National Parks and Snowy Hydro to implement new vehicle arrangements for the Eucumbene River at the Denison camping area.

“Fishers were extremely positive about the new arrangements and problems seen in previous years, such as vehicles driving across spawning beds causing environmental damage, were not reported this year,” Mr Tully said.

NSGFC news – It is now the end of Narooma Sport and Gamefishing Club’s yearly length-only competition for 2016-2017.  Results will be published later, but don’t let that stop you as the new comp has already started, so lets see some new entries. Young Alana Hirs came in just in time with some late entries, a carp 69cm and an eel 86 cm. Alana caught the carp and eel at their farm property in Ensay in East Gippsland and entered the eel into the wild card section.

The eat-in at the club on Friday night was enjoyed by all with lots of laughs and the egg and bacon rolls weren't bad either on a cold evening. As usual the club is open every Friday night so bring your friends along and try some steak on the barbecue, a pizza in the pizza oven or even cook a meal in the kitchen.
