In a rugged game of Group 16 Rugby League, the Narooma Devils Under 18s went within a whisker of snatching an incredible semi-final win over Batemans Bay Tigers at Bombala last Sunday, going down 24-22 at full-time.
With only 13 players against the Bay’s full squad with seven reserves the Devils played their hearts out all day. The Tigers got away to a healthy start leading 16-0 coming up to half time but a try by Durramah Parsons, converted by Joey Scrymgeour, gave notice that the Devils weren't done yet, with the score at the break 16-6 to the Bay.
Straight after half time Nick Hoskins scored and Joey converted to make it 16-12 and it was game on.
The Bay scored two more tries to seemingly have Narooma covered at 24-12 but tries to Gus Wilton and Matt Parsons and a goal to Durramah closed to score to 24-22 with minutes to go.
It could have been a fairytale finish as Narooma raided the Bay’s line as full-time approached but a last gasp effort was thwarted by a loose ball and the game was over.
Coaches Mark Lonsdale and Kerry Day were proud of the way the players put in such a huge effort with special mention to Jordan Martin, Milo Campbell, Gus Wilton, Joey Scrymgeour and the Parsons boys; Matt, Durramah and Clyde. Also to Jackson Kelly and Marcus Lonsdale.
The team now travels to Pambula next Saturday where they will play the Bega Roosters at 12.45pm. The winner of this will go into the Preliminary Final. We beat the Roosters just a few weeks ago so the team should go in full of confidence.
Let’s see lots of support for the boys!
