The Narooma Sporting and Services Club received an SOS from Eurobodalla Health regarding their patient Mr Childs and his desperate need for a ramp to accommodate his motorised scooter.
Club CEO Tony Casu said the the club’s board after hearing of the call for help, kicked into gear with the thought, “There must be a way for the club to achieve this, and make it happen.”
Mr Child, now 84 years old, has been a member of the club since February 1988 and was struggling to find assistance from any government department regarding the funds to build the much needed ramp that would allow Ken to keep using and living in his own home.
“Ken lost part of his right leg many years ago and was now having great difficulty getting off his scooter, and up his stairs into the house,” Mr Casu said.
After consulting with Eurobodalla Health on the type of ramp needed, the club was able to fund the project by bringing the Narooma Woodies woodworking group on board, who in turn engaged local builder Scott Ker.
Mr Ker agreed to greatly discount the project for Mr Child, along with Cameron’s Building Supplies agreeing to the supply of discounted materials once the nature of the project was explained to everyone.
So in mid-July when the materials were delivered, Mr Ker went to work on the project, with some of the clubs directors helping out as the labourers or “go-fors”, Mr Casu said.
“With the project now built, Ken again has full access to his house and does not need to move into a nursing home due to him mobility,” he said “The club board would like to sincerely thank Scott Ker for making the ramp become a reality and helping the club to make the project happen.”
Builder Scott Ker got together with club CEO Tony Casu, president Graham Reeve and club directors Jon King, Paul Naylor and John Rowley for a photo recently, but unfortunately Mr Child could not make it as he had an appointment at hospital.
