Social Bowls Winners Circle.
Wednesday 06-09-2017: 42 bowlers (7 rinks triples) were in attendance for the day's matches. The winners on the day were decided by the team with the lowest winning margin, & that team consisted of Garry (Orchids) Evans, Ian (Shorty) Smart & Col Armstrong. In a tied game of 17 shots, but with 11 ends won to 10 against, over Peter Dillon, Dennis Maggs & Brian Seaman. Runners-up were Alan Chisholm, Rod Holman & Peter Jones, 20 shots, & a plus 2 margin over Peter James, Michael Knight & John MacNamara, 18 shots. The earliest resting toucher prize of the day went to Warwick (Wazza) George.
Saturday 09-09-2017. There were enough players (22) to be able to hold the Jack-Pot Joker for the first time in 4 weeks. We had 4 rinks pairs & 1 triples. The winners on the day were decided by the team with the lowest winning score & that team was the fantastic Kenny Burrows & equally fantastic Peter Jones, with a score of 18 shots over Graham Cummins & Tony Palmer 11 shots. Runners-up were, Gerry Harvey & Col Armstrong with 24 shots over Tony Fryer & Neville Butt 15. A lucky rink draw was then carried out to determine the winning Skip on that rink to cut the deck of cards in an attempt to turn up the Joker & claim the $300 Jack-pot, but was 3 cards off the Joker, so next time the Jack-pot is worth $320.
Sunday 10-09-2017. The afternoon Joes Special Mixed Bowls saw 19 (3 rinks triples) bowlers nominate for the afternoon games. The winners were decided by lucky rinks with that lucky rink being rink 4 & the lucky players were Lorraine Mitchell, Pat Woods & Merrie Downie 25 shots over John Hardy, Sue Wales & Jean Voss 14 shots.
Narooma Women
Following a show of hands three rinks of bowlers decided to take on the sunny, but wild and windy conditions last Tuesday and the conditions were blamed for many wayward bowls. Play finished after 16 ends and after the cards were examined the lucky rink prize was awarded to rink five. Leads Maureen Findlay and Gail Riley (sharing their game), second Pat Wood and Lorraine Mitchell (skip) played against Jenny Coulson, Pam Grant and Jean Vos (skip). Jean’s team took the lead early, then Lorraine’s ladies caught up with three ends to go and continued on to claim victory. In other results Clare Cork, Sue Wales and Kerry Ferguson (skip) def. Vonnie Moody, Heather McGourty and Merrie Downie (skip). Our weekly raffle winner Tanya Burr and Margaret Naylor (skip) led most of the way in their pairs game against Sue Bender and Mavis Hardy (skip), before going down by one shot. Best wishes to Annette Linney and Happy Birthday for this Saturday.
Dalmeny Men
PD Bob had a swinging Monday afternoon with 38 other bowlers in sunny skies and multi-directional wind gusts where secret ends decided the winners on 12 in Bodalla’s John Stove and Steal Coulson from the runners-up on 11 in Packman Ace, Bernie Smith and Towelling Lewis. The resting toucher went to Par Wain but the $153 jackpot was not won. Raffle prizes again went to those familiar faces in Bernie, Broker Jim, Garry L-rentacar and Scarf-man Jack.
Book results had 40 bowlers on a fine Thursday afternoon with the only swinger being the wind which saw the points system as the game decider for the winners in Mayoress Olwyn, Graham or Brett and Pat, Ron, Jim or Harrold from the runners-up in visitor Doug Sims, Packman Ace and Peter Talk-field. No resting toucher was scored nor was the $202 jackpot won. Wrong bias sinners got away scot-free and the raffle winners missed out being named but still kept their prizes.
Dalmeny Women
Although we were nearly blown away in the difficult conditions, we had a good game of bowls. The final of our Championship Fours was held this day. The victors were lead Gail Farrell, second Jan Jones, third Lyn Dunbar and skip Pat Barklem in a close match. This winning combination also won the money, with Olwyn Mayer, Lyn Goldsmith and Barbara Pearce as runners-up. Lyn Goldsmith also won the spider but really wasn’t very close at all. Pat Cameron scored a resting toucher. Congratulations to all bowlers and well done in the gusty, swirling, westerly wind.
Lyn Dunbar and Gabby Cheel took home the raffle prizes. Diary dates for the near future are the Drawn Pairs beginning on September 12 and Mixed Pairs following soon after, both fun events to play. Good bowling at the friendly club.
Tuross Head Men
The Tuross Head Men’s Bowling Club held another very successful Classic Pairs event last week. Players travelled from as far as Sydney and Lakes Entrance to compete for the $3300 in prize money.
Despite the very tricky windy conditions there was some high quality bowls played over the three days. Once again the ever reliable Bowls Organiser, Andrew Farrington, had everything organised superbly and the event ran very smoothly.
Three pairs managed to win all six of their games and shots difference was needed to separate them for the top places and prize money. Previous winners, Mark Kesby and Dave Roberts, came in first with a shots advantage of plus 111. Chris Pollock and Shane Quinlivan from Moruya came in second with six wins and plus 81. Bega’s Linton Rydell and Howard Blacker were the the third six game winners and their margin of plus 69 put them in third place.
Matty Morton and Shane Cooper from Bodalla took home fourth place prize money with 5 wins and plus 64 closely followed by Lakes Entrance player Kel Brandhoj and his partner Phil Burns from Merimbula on five wins and plus 58.
A big thank you to every one who assisted. Special thanks to Stephen Hodge for arranging sponsors and all the staff at the Club for their assistance. Once again the greens are a credit to the work of Tim Watson and his team.
We now turn our attention to local Championships with the Men’s Triples to be played in the next week closely followed by the Mixed Pairs.
