“Friendship through gardening”:’ our motto really says it all – good fellowship, sharing knowledge and helping our community.
The Narooma-Dalmeny-Kianga Garden Club was started in 1984 by five members; today it has more than 100.
About 70 regularly attend second Wednesdays of the month meetings in Club Narooma.
We are affiliated with the Garden Clubs of Australia Inc, through which we enjoy a number of benefits, including insurance of members engaged in Club activities.
Money raised through our activities is regularly donated to local community organisations – the Moruya Hospital Auxillary, student, rescue and service groups, the “Pink Day” Breast Cancer Appeal and such like.
We have also helped establish a number of gardens around our town and donated hard landscaping items.
Meetings are relaxed affairs followed by a scrumptious afternoon tea prepared by members.
Club Narooma is a generous host providing not only the venue but also coffee and tea as well as crockery free of charge.
Guest speakers inform us on a variety of subjects and a monthly Newsletter, full of topical items and helpful hints, is available free of charge.
Meeting activities include a Trading Table, where we can purchase plants at minimal cost; a “Plant of the Month” table to display examples taken from our gardens; a “Best in My Garden” friendly competition, and a regular raffle - plus lots of fun in the process.
From time to time useful articles such as gardening gloves are bulk purhased and sold to members at cost price.
Membership provides an opportunity to meet people in a warm and welcoming environment as well as to share in communal activities – day trips, local ‘garden crawls’ and our annual four-day coach trip to a variety of locations.
Trips are planned to include places of gardening, cultural, historical and heritage interest, all in the care of our local coach company’s attentive coach captains.
If you’re interested in exploring membership you don’t have to have a marvellous garden; some of our members live in flats and apartments with no garden at all, save perhaps for some potted shrubs and vegies.
Age is no handicap – one of our members has just celebrated her 98th birthday!
This is a good time to join as we will visit, on October 18, a number of local members’ gardens. Our four-day coach trip, scheduled for November 10-13, will include a guided tour of Goulburn, visits to historic gardens and homesteads as well as to some six or so open gardens at Crookwell’s annual Garden Festival.
Annual membership costs $10 and if you would like to learn more, phone Carol on 4476 1644.
