Pete and his band, the Only Ones, will launch the album with a South Coast mini-tour, performing at the Candelo Town Hall on Friday, October 20 and the Four Winds Windsong Pavilion, Barragga Bay on Saturday, October 21.
A collection of vibrant vignettes, CALM reads as a survival manual for contemporary small-town country Australia; caravan renovations, insomniainducing anxiety, romantic beginnings on South Coast beaches, or losing your lover to the Mars 1 colonisation project.
Pete’s piano driven indie-folk-pop-rock is laid down on the solid foundation of the playing of the Only Ones; Heath Cullen on guitar, Robyn Martin on bass, Jay McMahon on drums, Kate Burke on guitar and violin, and features Melbourne’s Eamon McNelis (Flap!) on horns.
Produced by Pete and Kate Burke, and mixed by Adam Rhodes (The Cat Empire, Paul Kelly, Angus & Julia Stone), the album is a journey through Pete’s last eight years of songwriting, with the inclusion of three of his favourite and most popular obscure covers.
Highlights include the rocking anxiety-fuelled title track Calm, the interplanetary sci-folk Mars 1, the climactic optimistic closing track Beside Me, and a somewhat spontaneous cover of the Wayfaring Strangers’ Fun Run.
Opening both the shows will be the sweet melancholic folk-pop sounds of the Elegant Aliens, a Candelo family ensemble, featuring the singing of John Fitzmaurice, accompanied by harp, cello and guitar.
