After the harbour we walked through Dickinson Park to Bermagui Point, and continued out to Dickinson Recreation Reserve to The Slot and the Big Steps. Here we could see the remains of the old wharf, and the information sign showed photos of the first wharf and what it looked like as it evolved from shipping timber to processing and canning fish before shipping, and then to shipping live animals along the coast as well as providing passenger accommodation on the regular passenger ships.

From here we continued around to The Blue Pool and again saw early photos of the pool with its history. We also discovered the various fishermen trails to the rocks, though with the big seas running we saw no fishermen below. After this we headed down Murrah Street across to the old stream which we followed back to the harbour, for fish and chips. Jan Thomas was thanked for this enjoyable 7km exploratory around beautiful Bermagui.

On Sunday, November 19, we saw a lot of past mining history in the Moruya area. It was a fascinating walk, only about 6km, but so many old mine workings and relics scattered over a large section of bush. Walkers spent most of the day trying to envisage how the area must have looked when the mines were being worked, and what all the relics were originally used for.

The one creek was flowing well after the recent rain, so it was boots off for most people to cross it. There was also a lovely bit of rainforest along part of the creek. This exploratory was done with the Batemans Bay Bushwalkers, and their knowledge of the area’s history help us to better understand part of our local history.
