A woman has died and a man is in hospital after a house was destroyed by fire on the South Coast.
A man woke to find smoke filling his bedroom at a Tura Beach home about 12.30am on Christmas Day and called emergency services.
The man told police officers that the couple he was visiting were still inside the house.
Officers entered the house and found a 67-year-old man lying on the floor. They helped him outside, but the fire became too intense for them to search any further.
Seven crews from both the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW arrived shortly after and quickly brought the fire under control, but the fire was so intense the roof collapsed.
Fire crews, including fire investigators, remained on scene on Christmas morning along with forensic police a FRNSW spokesman said.
Emergency services were able to enter the house late on Christmas morning where they found a body.
They have not formally identified the body, but police believe it is the 61-year-old woman who was initially unaccounted for.
The 67-year-old man remains at the South East Regional Hospital where he was being treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire has not been established.
