After ringing in the new year, Narooma celebrated Australia Day with aplomb, while the new CEO brought a new focus to Katungul Aboriginal Medical Service. The Luke Pepper-trained Marquee won the Narooma Cup.

February saw dairying take a hit as the Sherringham Farm was closed and the herd dispersed. Narooma Devils’ Marcus Lonsdale-Pattend took off to Newcastle for the Indigenous All Stars camp.
Despite the rain, March’s Relay for Life was a great success, and Mad Hatters abounded at Bermi’s Seaside Fair. The wet weather also affected many sporting codes, with the cricket season coming to a drizzly end.
April’s main milestone was a centenary celebration for Dalmeny’s George Findley. A Tilba tree was saved. Conditions were perfect at Kianga for the inaugural Dalmeny Boardriders comp.
The Oyster Festival in May was a pearler, with over 23,000 oysters eaten, and the Narooma busking festival made a lot of noise. The Numnutz took to the water for their first swim of winter.
Winter walkers were welcomed to the reopened Gulaga mountain trail in June. A southern right whale relaxed at Dalmeny. Val went to Vail and did Narooma proud in snowboarding.
July saw the iconic River Cottage property sold to a Sydney builder, while tree-lopping in town went very wrong when a large crane toppled over on Clarke Street. The Lions continued their dominant run, mauling the Diggers at Bermagui.
Cobargo’s true colours shone in August as the village rallied around Post Office workers. It was a winning month with Narooma cleaning up at the shire’s annual business awards. Narooma also beat Bodalla in the netball, though the win was hard-fought.
Come September Narooma students frocked up for their formal. The science ship RV Investigator returned to Montague Island for the second time in two years. Students from Narooma High got the ball rolling at the Boccia grand finals in Sydney.
A feisty farmer continued his fight on fireweed in October, which also saw the last touches to the Kinema facelift. Cobargo’s Regina Nicholls traveled up to Roma for the Pony Club sporting champs bringing home a swag of ribbons.
November saw the mayor confirm Narooma’s pool as the shire’s premier swimming facility. Records were smashed when 60 boats floated across Wagonga Inlet. Golfer Sylvia Donohoe took out the 2017 Seahorse Classic.
Good rain in December saw water flow into the ocean from a reopened Courunna Lake, while at Dalmeny a stolen car plunged down a cliff and into the sea. Narooma’s Lilly Rose-Bennett shone in the Youth 7s Nationals.
