Yannis Gantner and Luke Redmond, along with Mr Redmond’s wife Lou, have been operating the Bermagui Beach Hotel since August, completing the first stage of their major renovations just ahead of the Christmas rush.
A brand new deck overlooks the stunning view across Horseshoe Bay towards Gulaga, while the adjacent bistro has reopened for business with a fresh and open new look.
Both Mr Gantner and Mr Redmond have strong connections to the Bermagui area, growing up here during their school years.
Mr Gantner – grandson of the late Four Winds founder and patron Neilma Gantner – said he loved this area even after moving to Melbourne.
“I love Bermagui – it always draws me back wherever I am. It’s a very special place,” he said.
“I always wanted to find something worthwhile that would keep me in Bermagui permanently.”
It was a similar motivation for Mr Redmond, who was general manager of the 18 Footers Sailing Club at Double Bay for the past decade but whose family still calls Quaama home.
“The pub needed an injection of love and youth to bring it back to life and we’re pushing it in more of a family-friendly direction,” Mr Redmond said.
He said the first point of order was shifting the poker machines away from the front balcony, which has now become a much more welcoming space with its wide open sliding front glass doors and timber deck.
“Everyone has been so supportive and we’re getting great feedback,” Mr Redmond said.
“And the tradies have been phenomenal.”
However, the pair isn’t done yet, with plans to further develop the town’s only pub as a central hub for the whole community.
“Two years ago I never expected to be here, and it’s still evolving as well,” Mr Gantner said. “We’re flat out, but having a ball.”
“We’re dreamers,” Mr Redmond added. “We need Lou to keep us in line!”
