Far South Coast police said at least three offenders smashed a window and forced their way into a Bodalla service station just before 1am on Saturday, January 6.
They stole a cash register, safe and cigarettes, police said.
A resident living at the rear of the business shouted at the offenders before alerting police.
Police believe the offenders drove to Moruya, where officers later found a burnt vehicle, believed to be used in the crime, in Francis Street.
The empty safe was found in the destroyed car.
The car is believed to have been stolen from Mogo between 9.30am on Thursday, January 4, and 10am on Friday, January 5.
Police are investigating CCTV footage from the service station to identify the offenders.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Moruya Police Station on 4474 2444 or phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
