Probably the most important skills a child learns at school are reading and writing, but this is not easy for all children and too many leave school not reading and writing well.

In the Eurobodalla and Bega Valley shires, you can make a real difference to these local children’s lives and happiness by volunteering with an innovative locally established group, Youth Educational Support Service, YESS.
Many of local YESS tutors, such as Kathi Wirth, coordinator of the YESS Tilba Public School Program, believe it’s one of the most satisfying volunteering tasks they’ve ever undertaken.
For nine years, YESS has operated successfully in eight public primary and high schools from Narooma to Bega.
As the academic year has just started, YESS is actively seeking new volunteer tutors willing to give from an hour and a half to three hours a week for this important task.
You need no formal background in teaching, just a willingness to help children. Tutoring starts in February and is at the schools during term time.
Working closely with teachers and the NSW Education Department, YESS uses MULTILit, a highly effective literacy program developed by Macquarie University, to provide one-on-one tutoring for students selected by their school, see www.multilit.com
The NSW Education Department will provide new tutors with a day of MULTILit tutoring training in on March 13 and YESS provides further training and support.
YESS’s key objectives are to promote the educational achievement and career development of students and young people on the Far South Coast.
Over the last nine years, YESS volunteers using MULTILit have achieved wonderful results in boosting students’ reading skills, enhancing their confidence and improving their success at school.
