When Mike and Liz Hallahan saw the special nippers program running in Pambula over seven years ago, they knew it was something that had to come to Moruya.

Now, the program supports nippers with disabilities – from ages six to 44 – to get in the surf, and have fun doing it.

The volunteers reckon they enjoy it more than the nippers do.

“It’s the most heart-warming thing,” volunteer Carol Young said.

“We more than enjoy it – I don’t even know what the word is.”

Founding volunteer Marco Cardinale has been caretaker of the club for over 30 years, and he says special nippers is the best thing he’s seen it do in that time.

“I’ve been involved in rescues, training – everything – and I think this is the most valuable program I’ve seen run here,” he said.

“It provides an opportunity. I get more out of it than the nippers do.

“It puts a smile on their faces, and gives carers a bit of a break.”

The only thing that limits the program is volunteer numbers. Due to ratio requirements, there is a waiting list of aspiring special nippers – and more regular volunteers could make their dreams a reality.

“Our biggest need is human resources,” Mr Hallahan said.
