Hazard reduction burns are undertaken to prepare for bush fires, but do not remove the threat of fire or the need for residents to have an up-to-date bush fire survival plan.
Controlled burns are scheduled for the following locations, weather permitting:
Narooma – Fishermans Crescent near Hillcrest Avenue. From April 21 to 24, 2018.
Potato Point – Potato Point Road. From April 20 to April 24, 2018.
Bodalla – Moruya State Forest near Dampier and north of the township north east of Bumbo Road. From April 23 to April 27, 2018.
Batemans Bay – Lattas Point Road. From April 21 to April 24, 2018.
Batemans Bay Cemetary – Princes Highway near Cranbrook Road. From April 20 to April 23, 2018.
Lilli Pilli – George Bass Drive and Denise Drive. From April 20 to April 23, 2018.
The RFS advises residents to take the following measures if a burn is planned for their area:
- Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke entering homes
- Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns
- Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage
- Remove washing from clotheslines
- Ensure pets have a protected area
- Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on
- Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety
- If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice
