Fantastic beasts emerged from the pages of folklore to showcase Eurobodalla Fibre and Textile Artists Group’s (EFTAG) enchanting creations at their wearable art fashion parade at the weekend.
Some of the region’s best designers offered up a visual treat for spectators at St Mary’s Performing Arts Centre in Moruya on Sunday.
The parade is a popular event in the River of Art Festival Program, with the 2018 showcase selling out more than a month in advance.
The event burst onto the South Coast’s creative scene more than a decade ago, and in recent years, with a move to a bigger venue and the addition of a catwalk and fashion show lighting, the parade has come into its own.
More than 100 pieces were on show at the May 20 parade, as inspired by this year’s theme – Folklore and Fantasy.
Parade coordinator Susan Jameson said the event encouraged EFTAG’s members to be brave and put their designs into the spotlight.
“For some of the members, this is stretching them out of what they normally do and encouraging them to enter into other competitions,” Ms Jameson said.
“There’s also that pride and joy of working with the group and the friendships and bonds that form within the group, which speaks to the theme of folklore.”
Moruya designer Julie Brennan said the event was a fun chance for creators to exhibit their works
“I really enjoy seeing people’s responses to my work and seeing how it affects them,” Ms Brennan said.
“There’s nothing like it in this area. People love the creativity and imagination that goes into it.”
Ms Brennan, who joined EFTAG in 2006, said it was not uncommon for designers to spend months creating a single piece of work. In this year’s parade, her cheeky ‘Booby Trap’ creation, which featured bra cup liners, turned heads.
“I’ve noticed my work is influenced by the material in front of me,” she said.
“I went looking for inspiration at the Reverse Garbage store in Sydney and found foam bra cup liners. I love using recycled materials in my work.”
Voting is still open in the people’s choice for the Golden Thread Award. Anyone who attended the parade on the night and is yet to submit their vote, can contact EFTAG via their website at eftag.com.au
