But then again that is Dalmeny Women's Bowling Club.
It is great to see that the numbers are steadily increasing every week. It was lovely to see the return of Eunice who has been absent for some time and we look forward to welcoming Maureen back when she has fully recovered.
We played Joe's Special this week which always makes it interesting. Results were decided by a draw for each position.
Results were:
Winners - Lead - Robin Gourley, Second - Pat Cameron and Skip Jan Jones
Runners-Up - Lead – Eunice Drake, Second – Gabby Cheel and Skip Enid Brooker
The spider was won Eunice Drake. Two players had resting touchers but the honour went to Gabby Cheel who bowled hers first, narrowly beating out Chris Hansen. Congratulations to them all.
Dalmeny Men
Due the Goose flitting around this week, getting specialised treatment from top to tail, only book results are available.
Monday had 36 bowlers on the green where the lowest winning margin decided the winners with some familiar faces in big John Oarley, Browny and Peter Hit-holden from the runners-up in Fencer Peter, Tom’s Danny Boy and Roger Goodans.
Neither the resting toucher nor the $265 jackpot was won. The wrong bias sinners and the raffle prize winners were not recorded.
A fine Thursday saw 33 bowlers going around with “secret ends” deciding the winners in Mayoress Olwyn, Bluey Ralph and gospeller Bob from the runners-up in Ex.PM Neil and Cheryl Badrim.
The resting toucher went to gospeller Bob but the $241 jackpot stayed in the pot. Once again wrong bias sinners and the raffle winners got away with a clear record and the prizes.
In the final match of the major pairs Sienna Don and Chef Keith were victorious over Towelling Lewis and Hottie Smith leading throughout the game for a convincing 23/14 win although Terry and Bernie finished well winning 4 out of the last 6 ends they had left their run too late.
Congratulations Keith and Don on a well deserved win. A better description of how the game progressed would have been given had the cards been left but thanks to Jan Jones we at least have a photo of the pairs final players.
Narooma Men
It was a great day for bowls on Wednesday with 44 bowlers making up six rinks of triples and two games of pairs.
The Maggsy Draw was highest score and this week the winners were Peter Townend, Peter Robson and Greg Ryan (skip) who raced out to a 26 to six lead after 11 ends and countered any comeback to take their match 34 to 20 against Warren Bender, John Downie and Col Armstrong (skip).
Second place went to Tony Gors and Peter Mitchell (skip) who built into their game to lead 17 to eight after 11 ends and continued their good form to win their game 33 to 12 against Neville Cork and Jeff Isles (skip).
John McNamara was in fine form to record the first resting toucher, at 1.05pm, well done John. Thank you to Hewson’s Narooma District Funerals whose sponsor’s prize was won by Tony Gors.
On Saturday there was a good turnout with the Maggsy Draw being lowest winning margin.
Winners were Kevvie Cullen and Greg Ryan (skip) who were down six to nine after 11 ends and they gradually worked to the lead to win their match 17 to 14 against Henk Koster and Jeremy Seaton (skip).
Second prize went to Trebly Trebilcock and Dennis Maggs (skip) who combined well to lead 12 to five at the halfway mark and kept up the momentum to take their match 19 to 13 against Graham Cummins and Col Armstrong (skip).
It was good to see Maggsy in fine form as he is on his way to play in the Australian Open where, out of 840 bowlers entered, he drew Jay Breust in the first Sectional play. What were the odds of that happening?
Their were 14 bowlers on Sunday ready to play Joe’s Special triples and the winners, with the highest winning score, were Graeme Smith and Tony Gors (skip) who played good bowls all day to take their match 29 to 11 against Bob Murphy and Janet Murphy (skip).
Mixed Pairs Championship Matches
First round matches in the Mixed Pairs Championship were played on Sunday.
Results were: Gail Palmer and Jay Breust (skip) played Sandra Breust and Keith Pickett (skip) and after leading 15 to 14 after 15 ends Gail and Jay drew clear to win 23 to 14. Denise and Rod Holman (skip) played Pam Grant and Graham Cummins (skip) and after a close game early Denise and Rod played some top bowls to take their match 30 to nine. Gail Riley and Col Armstrong (skip) played Merrie and John Downie (skip) and after being all square at 10 all after 11 ends Gail and Col got the upper hand to win 27 to 13.
Leila Gosper and John Breust (skip) played Bev and Keith Bowater (skip) and after being nine all after 10 ends Leila and John got a break to lead by seven shots only to have Bev and Keith come back to square the match at 20 all after 21 ends.
An extra end was played and Leila and John took two shots to win the match 33 to 20.
For Your Diary
Round two of the Club Mixed Pairs Championship should be played on or before Sunday.
To Ponder: Talent is a flame. Genius is a fire.
Narooma Women
There were two rinks of triples and two pairs games for social bowls last Tuesday. It was good to see Dawn Kenny back on the green again, Gail Palmer won the raffle with thanks to Rapley’s Meats.
The winning card was selected for rink one, where Clare Cork, Jan Rapkins and Leila Gosper had a good win against Coral Read, Betty Greenshields and Gail Palmer, collecting the day’s prizemoney.
Club Triples
A small group huddled in coats and blankets to watch the final of the club triples last Thursday. Leila Gosper (replacement for Marg Naylor), Sue Wales and Marilyn Thomson met Sue Bender, Pam Grant and Sandra Breust in cool, breezy conditions.
Sandra led in the early stages then Marilyn closed in to level the scores at 12 all at the half-way mark. Both teams stayed in close touch over the next few ends, then Sandra gained the advantage and held on to win by a close margin, despite Marilyn closing in over the last 2 ends. Commiserations to Leila, Sue and Marilyn and congratulations to Sue.
Pam and Sandra – 2018 Triples Champions.
Life Member Pairs – entry sheet is on the notice board. Single entries, teams drawn.
Tuross Head Men
Veteran Tuross bowler, Stan Peck, has won his way into yet another Club Major Singles Championship Final with a masterly display in his semi-final against John Fahey.
The match was played in ideal conditions with the green playing beautifully. Over 37 ends the two players put on a real show for those there to watch.
Fahey started well but after leading 5-2 he had to watch the first burst of brilliance from Peck who won the next 8 ends to move to a 13-5 lead. In this spell Peck was forced to play several bowls to ‘save’ the situation.
Fahey, who was also playing excellent bowls, gradually clawed his way back into the match. The quality of the draw bowling from both players was of the highest standard. The
closeness of the tussle was such that a score of more than one shot an end was a rarity. By the 25th end Fahey managed to grab the lead for the first time in 15 ends when he moved to the front at 19-18.
The players shared the ends as the score crept to 22-all when Peck played a very telling bowl. Holding a couple of shots Peck used his last bowl to move Fahey’s closest bowl enabling him to pick up a crucial 4 shots.
To his credit Fahey maintained his composure and narrowed the score to 27-26. Again it was anyone’s game. However, Peck played some great bowls in the next three ends to close out a 31-26 victory.
It was a wonderful match with both players giving an outstanding display of high class draw bowling.
As well as Fahey played, it always seemed that Peck had his measure. It was a great effort from the 84-year-old who has had a resurgence in his bowls since he has mastered the use of a bowling arm.
He now awaits the result of the remaining semi between John Monks and Michael Kennedy to see who he battles for the club championship.
