It is Winter Solstice time again – with the shortest day of the year this week – but it was perfect ocean swimming conditions for the Narooma Numnutz Winter Swimmers. The morning air temp was a fresh 11C (with a windchill factor down to 5C) but that didn’t stop the 18 brave swimmers from taking to the water.

The ideal ocean conditions had course master Jason Hextel decide on the Numnutz signature swim: out to sea and back in through the infamous Narooma Bar. Firstly, a very chilly “walk of shame” along the sand from Bar Beach South over to the ocean side of the North Breakwall.
Out along the breakwall rip, then the Nutz enjoyed the “slingshot” around the rocks and into a strong incoming tide. On the way back in through the Bar there were plenty of fish to be seen and it was time for the customary joke from Mark ‘Podge’ Rogerson.
Further upstream there were more fish and even an acrobatic seal spearing up out of the water. The incoming tide took us all the way back to ‘Radar’ Ray’s card table and some nice hot beverages. Afterwards it was back to Numnutz HQ – the Raw Prawn Bistro at Narooma Hotel – for the debrief, general business and some of Scotty’s delicious special warm stew. Fine master Locko was back to his old tricks, firing off $5 fines to the unsuspecting.
A reminder that the annual Montague Island swim is on this Sunday, June 24 with thanks to Norm and the crew from Narooma Charters. Meet at 8.30am at the Town Wharf for a 9am departure. All swimmers are welcome, including other clubs.
