The Narooma News recently spoke to the shire’s Virginia Allen – mother of Y Drive participant Jaimee – and program mentor Jeff Halls
Both Mr Halls and Ms Allen threw their weight behind Fairfax Media’s FIX IT NOW campaign to secure an 80/20 funding agreement between the state and federal governments to upgrade the Princes Highway.
Ms Allen said she was concerned about Jaimee travelling on their highway in its current state, especially as a new driver.
“(The Princes Highway) definitely needs upgrades,” Ms Allen said.
“I know a lot of it is drivers at fault and not driving to the conditions, but the road is shocking for a main highway.
“It’s not big enough, it needs widening and safety barriers would be great.
“The Clyde Mountain is a shocker and so is the ‘Mad Mile’. It really needs some looking into. Hopefully we will get the funding to fix it.”
Mr Halls, a former truck driver, echoed this call for safety improvements.
“To make the roads safer, you’d be better with four lanes rather than two,” Mr Halls said.
“When you get a big semi-trailer and you come across a small bridge, there’s not much room.
“But if you drive to the conditions, the roads are alight. If everybody did the right thing, our roads would be sufficient.”
