Narooma PCYC boxer Jake ‘The Snake’ Jamieson is the 64-kilogram Elite Male Novice Boxing Champion after beating Christian Millares in Berkeley on Saturday, July 7.

Jamieson, 25, had already qualified for the bout by fighting through the qualifying tournament in Sutherland. He defeated an outclassed Bailey Lester in the quarter finals, before a win over Jake Burton (who he fought last month in Goulburn) in the semi finals.

In the final against Millares, Jake outworked and outscored the young boxer to bring the title back to the South Coast.

Jamieson’s coach, Scott Wharfe, said the win is a testament to the youngster’s hard work.

“It can’t be overstated how significant this result is for a young boxer,” he said. “Jake has trained like a demon for more than two years, and he dropped 10 per cent of his body weight in the final six weeks leading up to the event.”

Wharfe and Jamieson have seen many early mornings over the past couple of years, as they strive to make Jake a better boxer.

“Jake has been leaving home at 4.30am twice a week to drive to Narooma and train with me,” Wharfe said. “He then has to drive to Batemans Bay to work for the day.

“Hill sprints, torturous beach sessions, and driving to Goulburn and Warilla for sarring sessions have been part of Jake’s life for the past 12 months. This result is credit to the talent and work ethic of this young athlete.”
