Mick Anderson, the RFS Eurobodalla South Group Officer, said there “were several incidents” in the region.
“We had one down at Wagonga Scenic Drive, which was an escaped pile burn,” he said.
“We were also called to a motor vehicle accident, which turned out to be a previous incident.
“Last night, we had a vehicle into a house in Kianga.”
The vehicle into the house cause significant structural damage, but all occupants of the house, and the driver of the car, were fine.
Mr Anderson said a number of incidents have been caused by uncontrolled pile burns in recent weeks.
“We have had an awful lot of pile burns that people are doing, and they should be contacting fire control at Moruya 24 hours before their burn,” he said. “They also need a good idea of what the weather is doing, because they’re lighting these things up, and not really clearing the area properly.
“The wind comes up, and away they go. The fire gets into grassland, and then we have all sorts of problems.
“People aren’t aware of all the risks involved; whether it’s a lack of education or just indifference, I’m not sure.”
Mr Anderson said the potential penalties of an escaped burn were heavy.
“We encourage people to have the properties cleared, but they have to understand that if a fire escapes their property, they’re 100 per cent liable,” he said. “That includes any damages to neighbouring properties.
“The crews all throughout the Eurobodalla Shire have been putting in some hours on a lot of fires that were really unnecessary.
“With a bit of thought by the people on the properties, things like this wouldn’t happen.”
