Emily Holly Anna Bond, 18, faced Batemans Bay Local Court on Monday, August 13, pleading guilty to one count of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, two counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct and another of low-range drink driving.

Police said Bond was driving at more than 100km/h when she lost control of her car in a 60km/h zone on Hector McWilliam Drive, Tuross Head, on March 22.

Court documents said Bond had been drinking at a friend’s house in Tuross Head before the crash at the intersection of Winston Place.

Her car crossed onto the wrong side of the road before rolling and colliding heavily with a tree.

Bond and two of her passengers freed themselves from the wreckage; however, a third male passenger was trapped until emergency crews arrived.

He was flown to St George Hospital in Sydney with significant head injuries. Three months after the crash, he remained in the brain injury rehabilitation unit.

Bond and the other passengers were taken to Moruya Hospital. A female was transferred to Liverpool with a tear to her lungs and liver. A male was treated for a concussion.

Police said Bond told officers she had consumed “numerous shots of alcohol” prior to the crash.

A breath test returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.052, well above the provisional driver limit of zero.

Defence solicitor Brett Ford said Bond had no history of criminal or traffic offences before the incident.

“It’s a serious matter,” Mr Ford said.

“She is remorseful.

“It’s a life-changing experience and she’s otherwise considered a person of good character.”

Magistrate Doug Dick said the courts took offences of this nature very seriously.

“There’s no doubt you have learned a great deal,” Mr Dick said.

“When it involves a motor vehicle and people are injured, the court needs to take a firm stance.”

Bond was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service and was disqualified from driving for 18 months.
