Mayor Liz Innes brought a mayoral minute to the Tuesday, August 14 Eurobodalla Shire Council meeting, offering help for Cobar Shire in the form of a “shire friendship” and working group.
“I believe our community is able to make a difference," Cr Innes said.
“We can provide mutual co-operation and understanding to assist the community through this drought.
“Cobar Shire Council is currently in “drought” or “intense drought”. The majority of our shire is now drought affected.
“The mayor of Cobar is delighted we have reached out in this way. Representatives from Rotary, Quota, Lions and schools are involved.”
Councillor Lindsay Brown said Cobar was an isolated, but proud shire, facing different challenges to the Eurbodalla.
“Cobar is three and a half hours from Dubbo, which is the closest centre,” Cr Brown said.
“It is twelve times the size of the Eurobodalla and less than 10 per cent of the population.
“They are a proud community. Their mayor has been a councillor for 45 years and celebrates her 90th next birthday. She has a wonderful commitment to her community.
“They have had 25ml of rain for the whole year – their average total per year is 400ml.
“Stud farmers are destocking – it’s generations of work lost. We are fortunate we are in a position to assist.”
The council carried the proposal.
