“Horizon has been providing customer-owned banking to South Coast communities since 1964,” says branch manager Jenny McKenzie, and “We’ve had a branch presence in Moruya since 1971.”
The local branch opened because “Horizon saw the need to offer the Moruya community with a customer-owned banking alternative to traditional banking.”
Horizon has 60 staff and a branch network that spans the NSW South Coast from Thirroul to Merimbula. Moruya has three staff who, combined, have worked with Horizon for over two decades.
In terms of being local and proud, “The Moruya community has been a fantastic support to Horizon over the years. Our customers and other locals are friendly, generous people who we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know through community events and activities we have been a part of.”
To give you some examples, “Horizon’s Moruya branch has been proud sponsors of community events such as the Moruya Lions Club Carols by Candlelight, the Granite Town Festival and the Eurobodalla District Show. We also get involved in community activities such as collecting items for Christmas Giving Trees and installing a Christmas village in our front window usually around November which is a hit with the kids. We’ve also supported local clubs and sporting groups such as the South Coast Cruisers Club and Euro Coast Athletics.”

Horizon offers home, car, personal and investment loans, credit card, insurances and financial planning. “We also have a range of savings accounts and term deposits, as well as innovative services such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay and Google Pay,” says Ms McKenzie.
Importantly, “Being a customer-owned financial institution means we don’t pay profits to shareholders. Profits are re-invested back into the business to minimise fees, provide competitive rates and the latest access and payment facilities such as mobile payments and more recently Fast Payments.
“We realise that when it comes to making important financial decisions; such as taking out a loan to purchase a first home or investment property, people still value friendly, personal service and speaking with someone face to face.
“Our branch managers are experienced lenders and will always provide advice on loans and insurances that is informative and relevant to your situation. We are also renowned for providing quick answers on loan applications – within one business day.” In addition to the everyday savings accounts and term deposits, there are also reward saver accounts and Christmas Club.
We also asked Ms McKenzie about the current trends in personal banking.
“We’re seeing a lot of people making the switch from the big banks. They’re disenchanted and looking for a banking alternative they know they can trust and who will look after them. People are increasingly looking for that personal service.
“New research tells us that customer-owned institutions are receiving the highest scores for customer satisfaction and advocacy.”
Finances are also an aspect of life for which it is important to seek professional advice.
“Seeking information from a well known business that has stood the test of time is the best decision when it comes to loans and savings. For loans, it’s always best to speak to an experienced lender who will explore options with you and help you achieve your goals quickly, efficiently and cost effectively,” concluded Ms McKenzie.
