Trek4Kidz is the brainchild of Steve Smith, Don Higgins, Tony Russell and Peter Ashbury – a social event for those keen to explore the Australian bush and a driving ambition to help raise funds for the kids’ charity –with more than $2 million to date.
The annual week-long event explores different regional areas, covering about 4000 kilometres each trip. The first year, nine cars participated, with $12,500 raised. The event has steadily increased; this year 21 cars attended and $180,000 for the Starlight Foundation.
No money is taken from the donations received to cover administration costs. These funds enable Starlight to grant hundreds of life-changing wishes or transform the hospital experience for thousands of sick children at hospitals around Australia.
To participate in the Trek4Kidz rally, a road registered car with at least third-party insurance is needed, but more important is a positive attitude. There is an entry fee of $500 per car and each participant raises a minimum of $1000 through fundraising. The car that raises the most funds has the privilege of starting the rally each day.
More funds are raised during the trek, with auctions held in towns along the route and Lions Clubs assisting with catering and donations.
