“Tanker 398 has been away for four months; it’s had a full refit,” the NSW Fire and Rescue Narooma captain said. “Apart from the paint and other cosmetic stuff, the’ve upgraded the electricals, the front springs and shockers, and the mechanical stuff has been serviced.”
Mr Dawson said NSW Fire and Rescue expect to get fifteen years out of a truck: “This one is nine, it should go another seven or eight years.”
The Narooma crew had to rely on the temporary service vehicle to deal with the 30-odd calls they took while 398 was away: “It's good to have 398 back. When you are out in the bush you need to have trust in your equipment and know the capability of it,” Mr Dawson said.
“The temporary truck did a good job but was a bit of a slug on the highway.”
Despite some good recent rain, Mr Dawson reminds the public not to be complacent about fire risk: “I hope no one goes lighting fires because underneath the green coming up, it is still pretty dry out there.”
