“My greyhound, Ollie, is a former racer and lives in Narooma with me: we are both retired and inseparable,” Mr Beff said.
“Adopting a rescue greyhound is much like choosing a partner on a computer dating site. One visits the rescue website, swipes through a list of photos and you select one that appeals.”
Mr Beff gave the classic reasons for his and Ollie’s love affair – including Ollie’s purr-fect quirks.
“He makes me laugh,” he said.
“He's funny in so many ways - he sings to music, he zooms about and plays for five minutes each morning, uses a large outdoor litter tray, and he purrs like a cat when content.”
Before he was adopted, Ollie was injured racing. The injury was left untreated, and he still walks with a limp. Mr Beff urged others looking at a new family member to consider a greyhound.
“I was attracted to the breed through publicity on the status of unwanted racing greyhounds in NSW,” he said.
“My research showed they are loving gentle dogs and very easy to care for. There is still too much cruelty in the industry. Being part of the rescue process is a great feeling, and the dog you save makes a fabulous pet.”
