Alongside his own Vietnam service medals, Trevor wore his father Robert Timothy Bennett’s medals from World War II, and – for the first time – he was also wearing the medals of his wife’s great uncle.
Great uncle Frederick Wallace Grau fought in the First World War and his medals had special significance on this Remembrance Day, 100 years since the signing of the Armistice. He hailed from the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland, and joined the First Australian Light Horse as a private.
“When he was a sergeant, he joined the second light horse and he fought in Gallipoli, and after Galipoli he went to Palestine,” Mr Bennett said.
“He was killed in Palestine on July 14, 1918 four months before the war ended. He had been through nearly the whole of World War I and I am proud to be wearing his medals today,” Mr Bennett said.
