The meeting was held at Captain Oldrey Park Hall. Reverend Linda Chapman was the keynote speaker.
“It is within the bigger picture that we must consider all of our environmental practices”, she said.
“We must take biodiversity seriously”.
Barbara Roberts, President of Coastwatchers Association, also spoke.
“Coastwatchers has been a local environment group for 30 plus years, and engaged with the Rural Lands Strategy process over six years,” she said.
“(We) wrote three submissions, consistently advocating for retention of native vegetation and biodiversity overlays in the Local Environment Plan.”
Organisers said more than 80 people signed letters to Bega MP Andrew Constance and Planning Minister Anthony Roberts, requesting they reject the council's proposed RLS. Organisers say the total number of letters signed opposing the changes is 1206.
Leanne Atkinson, ALP Candidate for Bega, attended and gave a commitment to take the concerns raised by community members back to the Labor Party.
Mayor Liz Innes also attended, as did councillor Anthony Mayne.
