Narooma Historical Society: Guest speaker on Sunday, March 17, is Narooma historian and Society member Eleanor Robin. Her topic is the "incipient capitalist Captain Charles Swanston: the lessons from history that we have yet to learn". Dr Robin last year published a biography of Captain Swanston which covered his years as a soldier with the East India Company, in Van Diemen’s Land as a legislator, merchant, civic leader and family man. He was managing director of the Derwent Bank, Australia’s first mortgage bank, and a founder of Melbourne whose main thoroughfare bears his name. She will reflect on Swanston’s trials and tribulations and some of the parallels with recent global financial turbulence. All welcome in the School of Arts Studios (red cottage behind BP) at 2pm. Afternoon tea provided.
Vinnies Narooma: This week the store has an assortment of colourful new hippie bags, which range from back packs and shoulder bags. "There’s a few new pairs of Grosby school shoes available and we are bringing out more winter clothing now that we’re in Autumn," a spokeswoman said. "Each week there’s a different colour on sale on the clothing so we rotate our stock around and they sell 50 per cent off the marked price. If anyone has any furniture in good and clean condition to donate it can be dropped during business hours Mon- Fri."
Narooma Quota Women’s Health and Wellbeing Day: March 23, Narooma Surf Club. Information and an enjoyable get-together. Angela Lowe and Kylie McLaren of Beautopia will talk about skin care, beauty and makeup. Nancy Casu, of Older, Fitter, Better, trains older adults to feel younger and more independent through strength, flexibility and balance. Her topic will be “A Healthy Mind and Body.” Cortney Summerell, of Sapphire Health and Dance, will demonstrate gentle Pilates for seniors. The Rural Fire Service will discuss safety in your home. It is Quota’s 100 th birthday this year, so there will be a cake in honour of the occasion. Narooma High School's hospitality and food technology students will provide a healthy lunch.
