Open letter to PM
Late last year, the NZ Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern offered a heartfelt apology to the family of the murdered British backpacker Grace Millane, saying there was a collective feeling of shame in New Zealand over her fate.

Is it utterly beyond you, as leader of this nation, to express the profound shame felt by innumerable Australians for the appalling slaughter that has been perpetrated by a deluded Aussie kid in New Zealand?
If this is so, it is the most powerful illustration of the relative moral stature and spiritual development of the two ANZAC prime ministers, and reflects very poorly on Australia as a nation.

Quarry park fan
Moruya Quarry Park is an idyllic picnic area on the north shore of the beautiful Moruya River, approximately 5km from the CBD.
BBQ facilities are available. Moruya Rotary established the park next to the historic quarry more than 30 years ago. The quarry is an important part of Moruya's history. Its granite was used in the Sydney Harbour Bridge and iconic buildings.
Mayor Liz Innes opened the upgraded park on Saturday, March 11, with members of the park's sunset committee, Rotary and others.
The park has been upgraded in stages. Recently, the council funded and built a concrete slab/footpath for safe access and for those less mobile, from the fishing platform to the toilets, which have disability facilities.
I thank the council for providing this easy, all-weather access. Those less mobile will certainly appreciate the ease of access as will others. Parking is provided immediately in front of the platform.
Each time I pass, somebody is casting a line, soaking up the sun or having a chat to whomever stops - especially they stay a while and wet a line! Council - well done.

Spotlight on gun control
The tragic events in New Zealand have shone a spotlight on the need for appropriate gun laws.
The annual sale of guns in Narooma, as part of the Huntfest event, is a matter of serious concern to many residents. SAFE (Stop Arms Fairs in Eurobodalla) sent candidates in the Bega electorate questions to elicit their views on the sale of guns on public land, and related matters. Three responded, and their answers can be found on our Facebook page.
Disappointingly, Bega MP Andrew Constance failed to respond. We can only assume he (and the government in which he serves as a minister), approves of the sale of guns on public land, and endorses the free entry of children to this location.
A reported 90,000 guns have been registered in Australia in the past two years. The last thing we need here in Eurobodalla is to be selling more of them. Where do you stand on this, Mr Constance?

Marine Park concerns
I read with disbelief "Fishers welcome news on no-take zones" (Narooma News, March 20).
No-take zones take up only 20 per cent of the park. These zones were designated through a long process in 2006 with input from a variety of stakeholders and the general public. The park was established in relation to the Marine Estate Management Act. It is up to us to to use everything within our grasp to protect our ecosystems. No-take zones are part of sustainable management. Many fishers welcome them, understanding they improve the ecosystem, which must be good for fish.
