Event director John Smythe said it was great to welcome back the northern surfer, who had won the event before, but also commended everyone who made it through the finals.
"He was consistently surfing well to get through to the final and hold on for the win - it can be quite a slog," Mr Smythe said.
"And everyone who was in the finals had surfed really well to get there, it can almost be an endurance test to get through to the finals."
Runner-up was Matt McKenzie-Smith from Merimbula with Pambula's Dave Prowse a close third.
Dave Arens, Theo Coates and Toby Jennings rounded out the finalists.
The competition was shifted from Merimbula's Main Beach to Pambula Beach, where northerly swells and 20-degree sunshine combined for an ideal surf for the field of 61 to hit the waves.
"It was a lovely day to be on the beach and probably one of the nicest surfs we've had in the last decade - the waves were a nice size and just kept rolling through all day."
Rolling three-to-four foot waves were breaking to the left and right with a light offshore breeze ensuring they kept a nice shape.
"Those conditions allow the Malibu riders to really do their thing - we had plenty of waves coming through and nice consistent sets - there weren't any long spells between sets so it was action plus from the first heat," Mr Smythe said.
Jacob Overend was the junior winner, while Kye Overend took out the men's contest.
Women's winner was Chloe Kriskow and the grommets (for under 15s) went to Brody Kellalea.
Fraser Buchanan was the veterans winner, while the Masters fell to Peter Byard.
The coveted Grey Grommets title was claimed this year by Leigh Gray.
Mr Smythe said the Malibu was an all-inclusive surf event run and coordinated by locals to make sure everyone has a good day.
"The key thing is it's a really fun one-day event particularly for the local surfers and we get a lot of support from the Sapphire Coast Boardriders," he said.
"And thank you to the Merimbula Sailboard Club members for their work and dedication to pull it off for the 33rd time - now we'll look forward to number 34."
In other surfing news, the club are soon to announce a new sponsorship deal that will strengthen the future of the Merimbula Classic.
"We'll have the artwork and the new announcement on our website soon with our new sponsorship deal to ensure the longevity of the Classic," Mr Smythe said.
Details will be published soon on the revamped website alongisde Malibu photos from the weekend at www.merimbulasailboardclub.com.au.
