Surveys during the Moruya BYO Bag campaign show consumers are making the move away from plastic bag waste and are choosing to bring their own bags when shopping.

Drivers of the campaign, the Moruya Business Chamber visited 32 businesses last month to ask whether there had been a change with customers bringing their own bags.

"The overwhelming reply was yes," Chamber president Jude Manahan said.

"Moruya shoppers are showing their environmental awareness and saying no to plastic bags.

"A majority are bringing their own bags and others are looking for an alternative to plastic bags," she said.

Since the launch of the campaign in July last year, Ms Manahan said over a third of the 32 businesses are no longer supplying plastic bags with another 25 percent planning to stop once current stock is depleted.

As the campaign has come to and end, the Moruya Business Chamber hopes to see businesses continue to cease the supply of plastic bags to customers.

"The committee is confident the BYO Bag project has successfully strengthened Moruya's identity as an environmentally aware and caring community, which in turn builds a confident town centre that supports local business," Ms Manahan said.
