Narooma FC's All Age Men got their season back on track on Friday night in Moruya with a commanding victory over Bodalla SC. Goals to Mark Singleton, Dylan Staunton and Josh Reakes were accentuated by an unfortunate own goal by Bodalla.
Narooma started strongly with Sid Smith connected well up front with Kyle Dixon, deployed in a more attacking role, causing havoc for the Bodalla defence and creating several early chances.
Bill Adams was unfortunate not to get on the score sheet after navigating several challenges to be clear in on goal, only to be cut down by the last man on the edge of the penalty area. Josh Reakes took full advantage of the resulting free kick to make it 1-0, and shortly afterwards added a second with a glancing header on the near post off a Kyle Dixon corner.
To say the first half was one-sided would be unfair on Bodalla, who fought back strongly before the break and nabbed a goal for their effort. If not for some resilient defensive work by Ben Ritchie, Adam Dixon and Alex Saines, with Ethan Anderson screening in front, Narooma might have gone into the break wondering where it all went wrong.
However, once the second half began, it was clear that Narooma had taken heed of the coach's advice and began the stronger team. When Bill Adams was cut down in the box early in the second stanza, Josh Reakes was on hand to convert from the spot to make it 3-1 and get the Narooma boys back on track.
From there it was all Narooma, with Ben Smith working tirelessly on the flank and Henry George showing just what the Narooma lads were missing in their loss to Broulee two weeks prior, with an energetic performance off the bench.
Mark Singleton claimed arguably the goal of the night, on the back of excellent team build-up play, while the ever-present Dylan Staunton took full advantage of a defensive blunder to claim a goal for himself. Another goal to Josh Reakes cancelled out a consolation goal to Bodalla, with the score finishing 7-2.
The All Age Men are back at Dalmeny next Friday, May 25, where the club will be hosting a "Junior Supporters Night".
Narooma FC U13 (4) def Moruya Royals (2)
Dalmeny Stadium was packed to capacity for this much anticipated fixture and the two teams did not disappoint, serving up a feast of football much to the delight of both sets of supporters.
The game was fiercely contested right from the start and possession changed hands frequently as both sides strived to assert their dominance. Logan Allison opened the scoring when he carried the ball on a weaving solo run from his own half, skipping past several Moruya players before slotting the ball home.
Moruya picked themselves up and battled hard to get back in the game and it was not long before their effort paid off. Despite loud appeals for offside, a through ball to the Moruya striker allowed him to go one-on-one with the keeper and fire the ball home to equalise.
The midfield tussle continued and some great work in central defence particularly by Mikayla Holman and Archie Cowie helped keep Moruya at bay. Narooma were slowly gaining the upper hand and once again went ahead when a powerful shot by Jordy Cunningham could only be parried by the Moruya keeper. Beau White was quickest to react and fired home from close range to make it 2-1 to Narooma at the break.
Moruya came back from the break with a sense of purpose and had the Narooma defence under pressure right from the whistle. Riley Park showed some good defensive skills to thwart Moruya down the right side and the Blues were forced to take route one straight down the middle.
A well-timed through ball allowed Moruya to break through and it was only a brave diving save by Shea Coppin-McQuillan at the feet of the advancing striker that prevented an equaliser.
Two minutes later Moruya again had a chance to draw level but Narooma breathed a sigh of relief as the ball slid narrowly past the upright. This seemed to spur the reds into action and as they pushed forward Jordy was able to release Katelyn down the right and this time it was the Moruya keeper who had to act quickly to deny Narooma. It was end to end stuff, highly entertaining for the crowd, but nerve racking for the management team.
Moruya again took advantage of a close offside call and it was only the brilliance of Shay Coppin-McQuillan with a one-handed diving save that once again broke the Blues hearts. The play surged back to the other end of the pitch and Talon cracked a shot from just outside the box that the Moruya keeper was relieved to see whistle narrowly past the post. Narooma were slowly gaining the upper hand and came close again as Beau White sent a shot just over the bar.
It seemed like only a matter of time before something had to give and sure enough, the increased Narooma pressure paid off when Talon fired a shot across goal that found its way into the back of the net.
Moruya were not finished yet and a slack bit of play at the back when Narooma failed to clear their lines handed the Blues a lifeline, which they gratefully accepted, bringing the score back to 3-2.
With 10 minutes remaining and the game still in the balance and all to play for there were several tense moments before the result was put beyond any doubt. The Narooma side were turning the screws on a rapidly tiring Moruya side and when Beau White collected the rebound from his own shot off the post, he gratefully accepted a second bite at the cherry and scored to seal the victory.
All in all this was a highly entertaining game by evenly matched teams. Final score Narooma 4-2 over Moruya Blues, with The Inlet Seafood Restaurant Man of the Match Award going to Narooma goalkeeper Shea Coppin-McQuillan for some outstanding saves that kept his side in the game.
