Visit your local museum
Call by your local art gallery or museum where free activities abound during the school holidays. Even if there's nothing specific on in your area in terms of programs, a tour of the current exhibit is always well worth a look. Most galleries boast a decent cafe for a pit stop to re-fuel hungry kids.
Build a box city or cubby
Grab the sheets, cardboard boxes or blankets and let the kids have fun constructing a box city or cubby house. Whether it's creating a simple cubby under the dining table using sheets and pegs, or building an elaborate box city from old cardboard boxes, your kids will love creating a secret hide-out for themselves.
Head to the snow
Now is the perfect time to rug up for a trip to the snow. Visiting the ski fields can be expensive; however, a simple trip to build a snowman needn't break the bank. Simply make a day trip into your nearest national park, complete with plenty of spare clothes and a picnic, and enjoy a few hours playing in the snow.
Crafternoon fun
If the weather's bleak, pull out the craft supplies for an afternoon of arts and craft. Here, preparation is key, so start gathering together the boxes, egg cartons and junk mail to transform into works of art a few days ahead. Add paint, glue and - for the brave - glitter to the equation and you are guaranteed a few hours of silence as your kids get busy making their masterpieces.
Get outdoors
Even in the depths of winter the sun often makes an appearance, so make the most of those pockets of warmth, rug up and get out and about. The kids will love the chance to stretch their legs, and if you pack a thermos full of hot chocolate, you can enjoy a warm drink while getting some much-needed fresh air. Pick a park or boardwalk where they can take their bikes and scooters and enjoy a few hours in the great outdoors.
Family bake off
Get ready to embrace the mess. We're not going to lie: when you've got eggs, flour and milk involved, you know things are going to get messy. However, kids love nothing more than spending the morning baking up a storm, so let them get to work and enjoy an afternoon tea feasting on their creations.
