The seaside village was packed to capacity over the long weekend but even though there was so much to see and do their favourite charity was not forgotten. Wallaga Lake Holiday Park hosted a huge ukulele concert where approximately 40 committed ukulele players performed at two shows at the Camel Rock Brewery over the Long Weekend.
The raffle and the bucket brigade for small change raised $1931 and the organiser of the event, Lori Hammerton, thanked the park management, The Merimbula Wobbles, Dalmeny Wahinis, The Ukes of Haphazard and her own 25 member Ukalips for giving of their time and wonderful talents to make the day great.
On Sunday the local CRAB (Cancer Research Advocate Bikers) held their annual Duck race in very inclement weather. However a cheque for $10,000 was handed to Gerry Hammerton for Can Assist.
To top off a big weekend, Jenni Smith from the Fairhaven area raised another $758 from the proceeds of a combined garage sale where 18 homes had a clean out to raise funds for Can Assist.
A total of $12,689 will be used to offer confidential financial assistance to people across the Bega Valley Shire who are affected by cancer. There are no administration costs associated with this local charity. Bermagui Life Member of Can Assist Lori Hammerton said it must be incredibly difficult for people with cancer to manage their bills for medical, pharmacy, accommodation, fuel and utilities while undergoing treatment. The worry would surely exacerbate the problem. For further information on how to access assistance from Bega Valley Can Assist phone 0439 328 634 or ask their medical practitioner.
Narooma CWA
The CWA Narooma AGM was held on Friday with Far South Coast Group president Helen Galton attending to chair the election of new office bearers. To steer the good-ship Narooma branch to October 2020 is president Louise Starkie, secretary Sally James and treasurer Margaret Doyle. Other positions were filled with the same names or to be branch efforts - this is partly due to falling membership, health or age. Narooma CWA will celebrate 90 years of service in August 2020. CWA is more than tea and scones, resolutions affecting many areas of daily life are taken to State Conference, and once supported by vote, appropriate levels of government and its depts are approached by state executive to act on these. One currently in news, at a recent conference was quad bike safety. To learn more, come along to the monthly meeting on the first Friday of each month at 1pm or phone Sally James 4476-1691.
