The result hinged on the last of 10 challenge games. Thirteen players had battled all day for their clubs in a match of golf croquet to determine the winner of the Eurocoast Challenge.
As Narooma's doubles pair of Janet Jones and Len Favier walked on to the court to contest the last match, Narooma was down four matches to five and behind by five points. Narooma had to win the last match to at least tie with Bermagui and also win by a sizable margin so as to finish ahead on points.
In a breathtaking finish in hot conditions, Janet Jones led the Narooma doubles team in a game win of seven points to one. This levelled the number of games to five all and put Narooma ahead of Bermagui 52 points to 51.
The captains of both clubs shook hands and declared the second leg challenge match a draw. Narooma had previously narrowly won the first leg in association croquet on October 31. The day was enjoyed by all and finished with a luncheon in the Dalmeny Club.
Narooma Captain Christine Stent congratulated all players on a great contest and thanked the visiting Bermagui players for participating and providing stiff competition. Bermagui Captain Lindsey Suttor thanked Narooma club for the invitation and hospitality.
