The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe gusty thunderstorm warning for the region as a cold front crosses the state.
The front is expected to move out to sea later this evening but residents are being advised to brace themselves for damaging winds.
Illawarra residents were also warned of potential hailstones.
The State Emergency Service encourages people to move their car under cover or away from trees; secure loose items around the house; keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines; avoid using the phone during the storm; stay indoors and ring SES on 132 500 for emergency assistance.
The bureau will update its website as the storm develops.
