Neuer, 34, appeared unhappy at times over the talks with the German Bundesliga champions, who have also signed Alexander Nuebel from next season onwards from Schalke as his potential eventual replacement.

But the deal is now done, and Neuer expressed his satisfaction.

"During the weeks of the shutdown for the coronavirus pandemic, I didn't want to make a decision because nobody knew if, when and how Bundesliga football would continue," he said in a club statement.

"It was important for me to continue working with our goalkeeping coach Toni Tapalovic. Now this has been resolved, I look to the future with great optimism. I feel very comfortable and at home in Bavaria. FC Bayern are one of Europe's top football clubs."

Munich chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge named Neuer "the best goalkeeper in the world" and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic said the renewal was "an important sign for FC Bayern as well as for Manuel.

"Together we have created a win-win situation. That's what was very important to Manuel and to us. Manuel stands for the continuous success of FC Bayern, for responsibility and world-class standards. I am delighted about our continued work together."

Neuer follows Thomas Mueller and Alphonso Davies in long-time renewals, with coach Hansi Flick now also contracted until 2023.

Neuer came to Munich in 2011 from Schalke and has won seven Bundesliga titles and the Champions League as part of the 2013 title treble. He is also a 2014 World Cup winner with the national team which he captains as well.
