A 26-hectare burn recently took place at Hazel Street, in the Moruya Heads area.
Fire and Rescue NSW duty commander Jason Murphy said it was important to conduct a slow burn to protect properties in suburban areas.
"Crews are reducing the fuel load, doing a strategic burn to give us a buffer between the urban interface and the bush," Mr Murphy said.
"If there was an uncontrolled fire event in the future, we would be able to reduce that fuel and lessen the impact on the urban interface."
He said Fire and Rescue NSW was focused on South Coast areas as weather conditions were favourable.
Fire and Rescue crews from Ulladulla to Bega joined forces to conduct the burns. They will be taking place in areas from Moruya to Merimbula over the coming weeks.
Southern bushfire officer Greg Rood explained the processes to identifying hazard reduction burn sites.
