BOWLS
Narooma
Social Bowls Winners' Circle: On Wednesday we had 4 rinks of triples and 2 rinks of pairs, with winners decided by Lowest Winning Margin. First place went to Pauly Naylor, Bobby Robbins and Billy Wilton (skip) who were all square on 5 occasions throughout their match and, with a final score of 18-all, they won on countback (and good looks) over Darrell Goodridge, Peter Townend and Peter McKay (skip). Billy Wilton skipped the winning team and showed what good bowls he has been playing by having the first resting toucher with his first bowl of the day. Well done Billy.
On Saturday winners were decided by Lowest Winning Margin and first place Paul Naylor, Bill Turnbull and Billy Wilton (skip), who had a terrific game against Craig Campbell, Carl Lee and Bobby Robbins (skip), where the margin was never more than 4 throughout and they ended up with a 20-to-18 win.
On Sunday we had 4 games of triples and the winners were decided, for the third time this week, by Lowest Winning Margin. First place went to Leo Winter, Enid Brooker and Gary Murane (skip) who were down 5 to 8 after 11 ends before they fought back and after picking up a shot on the last end they took their match 13 to 12 against Sue Sansom, Sue Bender and John Downie (skip). It was a warm welcome back to Pat Wood and she showed she had lost nothing in her absence as she took second place with Sue Wales and Merrie Downie (skip), where they led 11 to 3 after 10 ends before Merran Pell, Warren Bender and Kevin Callaway (skip) fought back to close the score, but all too late and Merrie's team went on to take the match 14-to-11.
Major Singles Championship: There was one semi-final match played on the weekend with Jeremy Seaton playing Greg Ryan. Jeremy led early in a hard-fought encounter but Greg started to get his line and length and won 9-out-of-10 ends to lead 19-to-10 after 15 ends. Both bowlers were playing great bowls with each end being very tight. Jeremy picked up several ends to trail by 4 shots after 20 ends, but Greg continued to play top bowls to draw away for a 31-to-19 win.
Minor Singles Championship: Three matches were played this week with the following results. Rod Holman and Allan Chisholm resumed their monumental clashes of earlier matches and this one didn't let us down. Allan burst out of the blocks to lead 14-to-5 after 15 ends and after a lot of give and take he led 24-to-14 after 29 ends. Rod started to get his act together and won the next 7 ends to hit the front 25-to-24. Allan rose to the challenge and reeled in 5 of the next 6 ends to lead 29-to-26 after 42 ends. Allan led 30-to-29 after 45 ends but Rod steadied on the last end to take this magnificent match 31-to-30. The next match was between Les Waldock and Peter Dillon and Les came out firing to lead 21-to-8 after 15 ends. Les continued his good form to take the match 31-to-14. The next match was between Peter Jones and Justin Bennett and Justin was all over the jack early on to lead 20-to-4 after 16 ends. Peter then got into his groove to win 7 of the next 8 ends to trail 17-to-24 after 24 ends. After 32 ends Justin led 29-to-27 and then picked up the final 2 ends for a solid 3- to-27 win.
Coming events: Third-round matches in the Major Singles are due to be played on or before Sunday. Minor Singles 2nd round due on or before Sunday.

Golf croquet, July 30: It was a seemingly quiet restart to golf croquet with only two doubles matches played, but the competition turned out to be between two very closely matched doubles teams.
