SES issues a flood evacuation warning for Moruya

The Moruya SES is warning of flooding for the Moruya River. Further heavy rain is forecast which may result in increased water heights and flooding above floor levels.

The NSW SES is advising residents and businesses in the Moruya CBD to prepare themselves to evacuate during daylight hours today.

Residents should monitor the situation and be prepared to evacuate when instructed to do so. A Flood Evacuation Order will be issued by the NSW SES if evacuation is required.

Stay with family or friends outside of Moruya CBD, unless you (or someone at your intended destination) are more vulnerable.

If you currently in self isolation due to COVID-19, contact the local Public Health Unit on 1800 004 599 before leaving your home, where possible.

What we are expecting:

Once water levels begin to rise in the Moruya River and surrounding creeks you can expect to see flooding of roads, sewerage lines, yards, sheds and low lying buildings. Power could also be lost.

You need to act now and have a plan should an Evacuation Order be issued.

Locations within the Moruya CBD that may be affected:

East of Vulcan Street (Princes Highway); Shore Street; Church Street; Queen Street; Ford Street; Campbell Street; East of Murray Street towards to Princes Highway and John Street.

What you need to do:

Simple things you can do now:

  • Identify a safe place to go to with family or friends.
  • Stay up to date with information - know when to move, where to go and safe ways to get there.
  • Lift belongings by placing them on tables, beds and benches. Put electrical items on top. You may be able to place light weight items in the roof space.
  • Take pets, essential items, warm clothes, medicines, insurance documents and valuables with you.
  • Leave as early as possible to avoid restricted road access.
  • Share this information with family, friends and neighbours and help others where possible.

If you are not prepared to leave if an Evacuation Order is issued, road closures and detours may result in people becoming trapped.

Emergency Services cannot always rescue or assist people if conditions are too dangerous.
