Vietnam Veterans Day
I would like to take this opportunity to inform the community of the arrangements for this memorial day on August 18 .
Due to the current situation with COVID-19 we are unable to hold our normal Vietnam Veterans Day service. However we are still planning a flag and wreath laying ceremony commencing at 11.00hrs. If you wish, you are welcome to lay a wreath after this time. If you are attending, please ensure you observe all government COVID-19 restrictions .

'Is hope lost for a truly Gateway Development?'
The council is committed to spend $70 million on the Mackay Park development but has failed to advise the community how this capital expenditure can be justified and how it will be paid for over its life without a special rate increase. On top of this, the cuts to the initial concept for Mackay Park Centre's amenities are considerable.
If the project goes ahead as planned, the Olympic pool will be bulldozed to be (supposedly) replaced by one half its size, the swimming club will have to share its small storage space with other users, the performance space started of at 1,000 seat capacity then cut to 800, then to 500 and now 350, the creche is gone altogether, the exhibition space is largely in an open unsecured lobby area and probably exposed to chlorine fumes, the theatre goers will have to share the foyer space with towel clad swimmers and sweaty gym patrons after spending mega bucks for their tickets because there's no other way of attracting top acts, the water slides will be a later addition maybe, the community meeting rooms are limited in size and number, the long distance bus stop has disappeared, the iconic mini-golf is gone, there is no room on the squashed up site for any additions or expansion and its supposed to be able to service the community's needs for 50+ years.
Back in 2016 after the bowling club was purchased to be part of the shire's gateway development in the Mackay Park precinct, the community expected two buildings, each specifically and sensibly purposed - one for the aquatic/sports/leisure activities and the other for the arts/cultural/community functions. That approach would have enabled an economical staged construction phase for each facility and leaving plenty of room for expansion or additions as the shire's population grew or as needs varied.
Where have all the community hopes gone?
