The Girls on Fire Emergency Services camp have had to chop, change and reschedule our six day residential recruit camp to ensure the safety of our participants. So rather than another cancelled event, were packing our bags and coming to you in November.

Born from the challenges faced by female firefighters, Girls on Fire is blazing a trail to encourage young women to consider careers or voluntary roles in emergency services.

During early November 2020, Girls on Fire are hosting COVID-19 safe day programs across Regional NSW designed to challenge, test and motivate the next generation of female emergency service workers.

Instead of six days in person, the camps will now involve an online portion as well as a one-day in-person intensive session. In small groups our instructors will run through tours of a fire control centre and a fire station as well as run through drills and equipment used by emergency services.

Founder, Bronnie Mackintosh, Manager of Inclusion at Fire and Rescue NSW said these programs have been driven by the mantra, you can't be what you can't see.

"Our first camp was immensely successful, we saw twenty young women graduate from the program equipped with new skills and appreciation for the emergency service sector, some of which are now in their final stages of Permanent Fire and Rescue Recruitment. We are extremely proud."

It was a welcome change for the hall as the markets opened for the first time this year.

The COVID-19 protocols weren't too onerous to observe and the stall holders and public were happy to comply. Stall holders once again delighted patrons who, after an unhurried browse, were seen walking out through the gates with arms full of preserves, books, baked goods, fresh vegetables, craft items and garden plants. Not to be disappointed with the missing Lions BBQ, they were also treated to the Taco Man's offerings of tacos, as well as hot dogs with his home-made sauces to spice things up.

As a much need fund-raising initiative to take the place of the regular Lions BBQ, our club has subscribed to a Wine Drive online. This project is of immense importance to our Lions Club as it will bring in much needed revenue while Covid 19 is around. The BBQ trailer will be out of action until COVID is under control.
