Keeping you in touch

It was with great delight at Narooma CWA AGM held Friday, October 2, that Far South Coast state executive representative Robyn Wright OAM awarded four members of the branch with their Long Service Badges.

Louise Starkie, Sandra Mott, Bernice Gale and Jenny Dickson have each given more than 20 years of service to Narooma branch, serving in many different roles both at branch and group level. It was a pleasant surprise for these hard-working members.

All positions were filled at the AGM with Louise Starkie, President; Sally James, Secretary and Margaret Doyle, Treasurer heading the members. Members are looking forward to Far South Coast Group hosting the State AGM/Conference at Bega in May 2021, all being well. This will be a chance for those non-members to come along and find out what CWA really does, not just tea and scones.

A big thank you to the community for the support you gave at the garage sale Narooma branch held on Sunday, October 4. It was a very successful fundraiser, the first held in a while. It was lovely to see people automatically sanitising and no complaints about providing contact numbers or physically distancing.

The craft group meets Fridays 10am-noon; all welcome to drop in and see if this is for you. Unfortunately choir/drama is on hold while coronavirus is of concern (normally, Tuesdays 1.30-2.30pm. For information phone Louise Starkie 4476 5131 or Sally James 4476 1691 or email

Monty's Place will celebrate its seventh birthday on October 21. Monty's is still going strong with a takeaway service every Wednesday from 12.00-1.30pm at the Uniting Church Hall in Narooma, beside the water tank.

There have been many challenges in seven years, but 2020 has tested the community like no other year. Bushfires and COVID-19 have disrupted all our lives and the consequences have fallen heavily on the disadvantaged and isolated. The Monty's committee and volunteers have worked hard to support their guests through this time.

Volunteer coordinator Di White said: "The success of Monty's Place is a tribute to our amazing volunteers who show up every week to provide friendship and a nutritious meal to our guests."

From June 2019 to March 2020, Monty's Place served 3,181 sit-down meals. This includes the 565 meals that Monty's prepared and served for the Narooma Evacuation Centre during the bushfires.

Monty's also provided 828 takeaway meals for guests who needed more support.

When COVID restricted all our lives in March, Monty's volunteers were determined their service would continue and quickly moved to a takeaway-only service. A further 1,403 takeaway meals were provided. Guests pick-up a takeaway bag containing a hot meal, bread, cake and fruit each week. There is an assortment of free food and other household items available. Monty's thanks guests for following strict hygiene and physical distancing. This takeaway service will continue until NSW Health requirements allow table service.

Providing 5,412 meals over the last year would not have been possible without the loyalty and generosity of many wonderful donors: Woolworths, Narooma; ABC Bakery; Tilba Milk and other businesses have supported Monty's Place throughout our seven years. Service groups have been incredibly generous, including Rotary, Narooma Tennis Club, Quota, Drop-in Centre, Lions Club, Men's Shed, Narooma RFS and others. Many individuals provide ongoing financial and in-kind to support.

The support from SHASA and MESA with the installation of solar panels, and support from 'Another Room' and Katrina Scobie with an extension to the Church Hall was invaluable in allowing Monty's Place to work more efficiently and safely.

Takeaway is Wednesday from 12.00-1.30pm. "We look forward to another year supporting the community and getting back to our normal sit-down service as soon as allowed," Ms White said.
