The awards represent excellence in journalism, and Stan is one of three finalists in the category of Coverage of a Major News Event or Issue - for his work on the Kangaroo Island bushfires.
The three finalists are:
- Stan Gorton, The Islander, "Kangaroo Island bushfire coverage"
- ABC News and ABC Regional and Local Team, ABC, "ABC Bushfire Coverage"
- Richard Baker and The Age hotel quarantine news team, The Age, "Hotel quarantine"
Stan's dedication in keeping people up-to-date on the unfolding bushfire devastation across hours, days and weeks last summer was not only beneficial to KI residents, but to their family and friends, all South Australians and the national and international communities.
He worked day and night covering stories - about fire-fighting efforts from volunteers to defence forces, home, property and stock losses and wildlife and flora destruction; to the support received from across the globe and the resilience shown by residents to begin the Island's rebuild.
The work continues as KI rises from the ashes with stories of determination, kindness and hope. Stan said the nomination was for everyone who went through the hell of last summer and for all those who thanked him for his coverage.
"It's an honour and a privilege to serve my community. Thank-you to everyone from the bottom of my heart. I'm over the moon to get the nomination, which will be the highlight of my career," he said.
"Thanks to all my trusted sources who helped me with the coverage. I could not have done without you. I'm hoping this can be a little silver lining for all those who lost so much and battled so bravely."
Stan said the nomination was also recognition for the important work that regional journalists do around Australia and the value of a local newspaper to keep residents informed and be a voice for the community.
