Last week during the full moon gummy activity hit a crescendo with large catches reported along the flathead grounds from Bithry's south to Haycock. Best results from deeper drifts at 21 fathoms out from Bournda Island. It has been a long while since flathead drifts brought in more gummy than flathead.
Snapper are have been a little quiet but by now with the January prawn run starting, offshore species snapper, morwong and kingfish will also be on the chew. There are also lots of large slimy mackerel about and when taken these are the best bait for everything.
Try soft plastics and micro jigs. When all else fails the humble pilchard is the best standby. For Australian salmon off the beaches try Tura, Haycock and Aslings at Eden. Off the Eden cruise ship wharf anglers have been busy fighting a pack of rat kingfish (undersize and must be released), try silver spinners.
The Merimbula Fishing Platform is now the scene of the annual luderick run with some lovely fish being taken on artificial stringy weed lures. The channels at Merimbula and Pambula are increasingly productive for bream, dusky flathead, flounder as well as tailor and trevally.
There are good tailor and Australian salmon in the Bega River.
