Narooma Dog Training Club spokesperson Carol Hellmers said that every dog, however cute and cuddly, has inherited some anatomical attributes and behaviours from their wild ancestors.
"If they were still living in the wild, your dog would hunt for food and consume whatever they caught - hair, bones, guts, basically the lot, however pet dogs depend on us to provide their food and for convenience, we often feed them tinned and processed food, much of which contains preservatives that are not good for them.
"There are many good dog foods on the market, so you can choose one that doesn't contain additives and mixing this with small portions of raw meat and bones, is a way to give your dog a more natural diet.
"We are all guilty of feeding our pet unsuitable foods, such as biscuits, chips and sweet treats so just remember that like us, those foods will put unwanted weight on your dog and can cause health problems in later life," she said.
