Sponsored by Boydtown Shipyard and supported by volunteers, a project to construct a St Ayles skiff rowing boat that began in February of this year is progressing nicely.
EMHS industrial arts teacher Brendon Richards said 12 students from Years 8-10 have been involved in the project to date, with more gradually being involved.
Design plans and information about the project are on display in the school library for students to look at, who can then express their interest to participate.
"It has taken a lot of planning and preparation to get this point, working on the frame and moulds," he said.
Students and volunteers dedicate their time during two or three sessions each week.
"The kids have shown real enthusiasm for woodworking and have a real sense of accomplishment," Brendon said.
"Gaining skills working with hand tools and power tools, they have learnt to work safely and cooperatively with each other."

Peter Ayling, secretary and treasurer of Boydtown Shipyard, said the kit for construction of the 22-foot four-oared St Ayles skiff came with very extensive instructions and is a modern design resembling a more traditional whaling boat, similar to those used on Twofold Bay and a significant part of Eden's history
While it was not possible to source some of the same materials and plans to replicate the original whaling boats, Peter said the kit chosen has been used in similar community projects around Australia
"We are hoping to get to a stage where the planking on the skiff is complete, upend it, and put it on a trailer to display at Eden Whale Festival," Peter said.
It is envisioned that the project will be complete sometime in 2022 and the boat will remain the property of the school.

There are currently three volunteers involved in supporting the community project, one of whom is based in Mallacoota.
