How to find 5km from your home and avoid a public infringement notice

The restrictions have left people confused about where they are and aren't allowed to go.

The update from NSW Health said: "In lockdown areas, the 10 kilometre rule will be reduced from 12.01am Monday, August 16, with shopping, exercise and outdoor recreation to be done in a person's local government area (LGA) or, if outside their LGA, within five kilometres of home."

What does the 5km rule mean?

Keira MP Ryan Park has made some sense of the rule on his social media.

"Ryan is a young fella who lives in East Corrimal (the Wollongong Local Govt Area). He wants to exercise to keep fit," Mr Park posted on Facebook.

"He is allowed to exercise anywhere in the Wollongong Local Govt Area.

"But he couldn't exercise anywhere in the Shellharbour Local Government Area because that would be more than five kilometres from his home."

He highlighted the words "to be done in a person's local government area".

"The five kilometres only applies if you have to leave the Local Government Area," Mr Park said.

Can I go anywhere within my LGA?

Kind of. If you are exercising or shopping, you can move anywhere in your LGA. But if you can't do those activities within your LGA, you can only go 5km from your home.

This rule doesn't apply to any areas currently in 'local government areas of concern'. In those areas, they can only travel 5km from their home at all times.
